# Fire permits in San Diego: how long they take and who pulls them

How long fire alarm, sprinkler and other fire permits take in the City of San Diego, how many are filed, and who pulls them, from 6,680 fire permits filed since January 1, 2024. Updated weekly from city permit records.

## At a glance

- **Fire alarm permits: 23 days** from application to issue (median); most take 12–55 days.
- **Fire sprinkler permits: 30 days**; most take 14–74 days.
- **Underground fire lines: 110 days**, the slowest fire permit by far; most take 47–204 days.
- **Kitchen hood suppression: 22 days**; most take 11–44 days.
- 6,680 fire permits filed since January 1, 2024: 3,157 alarm, 2,953 sprinkler, 299 underground and 271 kitchen hood. 83% were part of a larger building project.

> Time to issue runs from the day the application is created to the day the permit is issued. It includes time spent waiting on the applicant to answer plan-check comments, so it's the whole calendar, not just the city's review.

## How long each fire permit takes

| Permit | Median time to issue | Most permits (middle half) | Permits measured |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fire alarm | 23 days | 12–55 days | 2,525 |
| Fire sprinkler (suppression) | 30 days | 14–74 days | 2,245 |
| Underground fire line | 110 days | 47–204 days | 192 |
| Kitchen hood suppression | 22 days | 11–44 days | 216 |

### Standalone permits versus permits filed with a building project

17% of San Diego's fire permits are standalone fire projects, such as a new alarm panel or a sprinkler retrofit. The rest are filed as part of a larger building permit, such as a remodel or new building, and move through review with it.

| Permit | Standalone | With a building project |
|---|---|---|
| Fire alarm | 27 days | 22 days |
| Fire sprinkler (suppression) | 53 days | 29 days |
| Underground fire line | 65 days | 159 days |
| Kitchen hood suppression | 20 days | 24 days |

Standalone sprinkler permits took a median of 53 days, against 29 days when filed with a building project. Underground fire lines run the other way: 159 days with a building project, 65 days on their own, probably because they're tied to site and utility work on larger projects.

## Fire permits by year

| Year filed | Alarm | Sprinkler | Underground | Kitchen hood | Median time to issue |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 1,098 | 928 | 87 | 106 | 26 days |
| 2025 | 1,125 | 1,133 | 108 | 94 | 29 days |
| 2026 (to date) | 934 | 892 | 104 | 71 | 26 days (filed by May 1, 2026) |

170 alarm permits in this period were for switching a fire alarm's monitoring connection from a copper phone line to cellular, as carriers retire traditional landlines. If a building's alarm still reports over a phone line, expect to need one of these.

## What kinds of buildings

| Building or project type | Fire permits | Alarm | Sprinkler |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tenant improvements (remodels) | 3,814 | 1,617 | 1,968 |
| Apartment buildings (5+ units) | 486 | 166 | 214 |
| Apartment alterations (3+ units) | 261 | 128 | 132 |
| Accessory dwelling units | 130 | 38 | 88 |
| Industrial buildings | 102 | 44 | 51 |
| Other nonresidential alterations | 95 | 38 | 51 |
| Condo buildings (5+ units) | 80 | 51 | 23 |
| Nonresidential accessory structures | 70 | 24 | 41 |

Remodels dominate: 57% of fire permits are tenant improvements, where alarm devices and sprinkler heads are moved and added as a space is rebuilt for a new tenant.

## Planning a fire protection project in San Diego

1. **Budget a month for alarm and sprinkler permits,** and up to three months or more for an underground fire line. Start the underground permit first if the project needs one.
2. **Answer plan-check comments quickly.** The times above include the applicant's response time, so a slow resubmittal adds directly to the wait.
3. **Check whether your alarm still uses a phone line.** Cellular conversions need a permit too.
4. **Hire a licensed contractor and confirm the license before you sign.** [22 licensed fire protection companies are based in San Diego](/fire-protection/california/san-diego/); [check any contractor's license here](/tools/license-check/).

## Most active listed contractors

Ranked by fire permits filed in San Diego since January 1, 2024. San Diego publishes the permit holder's name but not a license number, so this counts only permits whose holder exactly matches the name of a C-16 contractor in our directory (36% of permits that name a holder). Alarm-only companies licensed as electrical (C-10) contractors aren't in the directory yet. Activity, not quality; no company pays to appear here.

## How these numbers are calculated

- **Source:** [City of San Diego Development Services permit approvals](https://data.sandiego.gov/datasets/development-permits/), open data, retrieved October 28, 2026 and refreshed weekly. Covers the City of San Diego only, not the rest of the county.
- **Permits counted:** the city's four fire permit types (alarm, suppression, underground fire line and kitchen hood) created since the start of the period, excluding cancelled and withdrawn applications (549 of them).
- **Time to issue:** application created to permit issued, for permits issued from applications at least 180 days old, so that slow permits have had time to finish. Permits not yet issued aren't in the timing figures.
- **Ranges:** the middle half of permits (25th to 75th percentile).
- **No costs:** San Diego doesn't publish a job value for fire permits. For cost benchmarks, see [fire protection costs in San Francisco](/guides/fire-protection-costs-san-francisco/).
