How long fire alarm, sprinkler and other fire permits take in the City of San Diego, how many are filed, and who pulls them, from 6,680 fire permits filed since January 1, 2024. Updated weekly from city permit records.

At a glance

Time to issue runs from the day the application is created to the day the permit is issued. It includes time spent waiting on the applicant to answer plan-check comments, so it's the whole calendar, not just the city's review.

Standalone permits versus permits filed with a building project

17% of San Diego's fire permits are standalone fire projects, such as a new alarm panel or a sprinkler retrofit. The rest are filed as part of a larger building permit, such as a remodel or new building, and move through review with it.

PermitStandaloneWith a building project
Fire alarm27 days22 days
Fire sprinkler (suppression)53 days29 days
Underground fire line65 days159 days
Kitchen hood suppression20 days24 days

Standalone sprinkler permits took a median of 53 days, against 29 days when filed with a building project. Underground fire lines run the other way: 159 days with a building project, 65 days on their own, probably because they're tied to site and utility work on larger projects.

Planning a fire protection project in San Diego

  1. Budget a month for alarm and sprinkler permits, and up to three months or more for an underground fire line. Start the underground permit first if the project needs one.
  2. Answer plan-check comments quickly. The times above include the applicant's response time, so a slow resubmittal adds directly to the wait.
  3. Check whether your alarm still uses a phone line. Cellular conversions need a permit too.
  4. Hire a licensed contractor and confirm the license before you sign. 22 licensed fire protection companies are based in San Diego; check any contractor's license here.

Most active listed contractors

Ranked by fire permits filed in San Diego since January 1, 2024. San Diego publishes the permit holder's name but not a license number, so this counts only permits whose holder exactly matches the name of a C-16 contractor in our directory (36% of permits that name a holder). Alarm-only companies licensed as electrical (C-10) contractors aren't in the directory yet. Activity, not quality; no company pays to appear here.
